Let us know more about her and her journey.

In a conversation with Ambika Lal:

Tell us something about your life. What do you do in your free time? What are your hobbies?

I am a professional lawyer who has worked with the top law firms in India. As I travelled across the World, my natural sense of style and fashion was appreciated by one and all. I then decided to convert my
creativity into her profession. I am an established Image Consultant in Kolkata and have launched my
signature Clothes Line under my label, Ambika Lal Designs. The plush and trendy clothes are available
across the World. My designs essay definitive lines and personalised fits. As a designer, I value my clients’
individuality by giving them the opportunity to be involved in the process. As a certified makeup consultant
by the London School of Makeup, I have tutorials and daily tips accessible via my Instagram account. I
also have an organic skin care product line, available under my label.

In my free time, I love to Dance and Cook. I love watching cooking shows on Netflix and recreating those
dishes at home.

Life in a Nutshell

Things you never leave home without: Phone
A song that describes you: Don’t know if it describes me but it definitely is one of my favourites, “I will
Possess your Heart” by Death Cab for Cutie
Favourite excuse to get away from things: Oh Shit! I totally forgot.
A thing that annoys you the most: Waiting
Stress reliever: My Doggy!

How did it all start? Who inspired you?

It’s been a gradual move away from law to fashion. As an Image Consultant, one of my clients asked me to
design some clothes for them which turned out to be a big hit. On top of that, I really enjoyed the creative
process of getting the clothes ready. Thats when I decided to take the plunge and focus my energy on
designing. After seeing a great response on Instagram from all over the world for my designs I was
motivated to start my website which is now live!

I truly believe that nothing inspires more than ones own life experiences. Right from school to college I’ve
been very outgoing and had the ability to connect with people. Being successful in a high stress environment
like Corporate Law gave me the confidence to work under pressure. Its very important to have a broad
outlook. This could be through travel or reading or meeting different people from different backgrounds. All
of this together has made me who I am and inspired the decisions I’ve taken.

What are some ways by which a regular college going girl can flaunt her basic clothes?

Be Confident! Be Comfortable! Nothing more striking than a confident girl walking in her white shirt and
jeans with a lot of panache. I love accessorising! A statement bag and some high heels really do the trick!

Tell us about the role your family and friends played in your journey?

My family has been instrumental in moulding me into a thorough professional. My husband and in-laws have
given me the confidence to do something different and creative without worrying about the consequences.

What kind of struggles did you face? How did you overcome them?

The biggest struggle I faced was all in my head. The transition from being a successful corporate lawyer with
a secure paycheck in a structured work environment to being self-employed and building everything from
scratch was the biggest hurdle. To overcome these obstacles I had to be motivated daily and not let the
small failures faze me. The most important thing that kept me going was my love for fashion. I don’t like
being second best at anything I do. That really drives me to be the best I can and that motivates me.

My favorites

Movie/TV show: Young Pope
Holiday Destination: Bora Bora/L.A
Book on the shelf: Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari
Actor: Shahrukh Khan
Hobby: Dancing while Cooking

What advice would you like to give to the aspiring youngsters in this field?

If you are passionate about anything in life, go for it. Don’t wait for the perfect time cause theres no such
thing. Be driven and take risks! Never put a time limit on success.

How social media collaborated in your career?

Instagram and Pinterest changed my life! It opened my eyes to a whole new world of fashion and gave me an
insight into what creative and smart people were doing all across the world. Its a breeding ground for
youngsters to put their creativity in front of the world. So many of my influences and inspirations are from
following random people on Instagram and Pinterest.

What are your future plans?

I have learnt not to make any future plans. My focus is on the present and try and live my life to the fullest. I work
best on my instincts and thats what worked for me so far.

Do you have a dream project which you eagerly want to work in?

I want to style 3 generations of Shahrukh Khans family. Haha

What should be the last line of your biography?

Been there. Done That
